Confederate States Army • Hood’s and McLaws’ Divisions

< to November • December 1863 January >

Hood’s and McLaws’ Divisions were detached from the Army of Northern Virginia in September of 1863 and transferred to Bragg’s Army of Tennessee. After the Battle of Chickamauga and Bragg’s investment of Chattanooga Longstreet was detached and sent to recapture Knoxville and secure the direct rail line to Virginia. The attempt failed, and on Decmber 4 Longstreet found out Bragg had been defeated at Chattanooga. Bragg ordered Longstreet to rejoin the Army of Tennessee, but Longstreet did not think it realistic considering that all of Grant’s forces were now between the two. He informed Bragg that he would maintain the siege as long as he could to delay Burnside from joining Grant, but then would return to Virginia. It is doubtless that the bad blood that had come between Bragg and Longstreet along with Longstreets belief that Bragg was not an effective commander played a big part. He began a withdrawal northeast to go into winter quarters, drawing Burnside behind him, and planned to return to Lee in the spring..
