Commanded by Major General William H. French

The Third Corps was discontinued on March 24th, 1864.  The 1st Division regiments were distributed to two brigades of the 3rd Division, 2nd Corps, except for two that were assigned to the Army of the Potomac’s Provost Guard. The Second Division became the Fourth Division, Second Corps and the Third Division became the Third Division, Sixth Corps. Major General French mustered out of the Volunteer Army in May, reverting to his Regular Army rank of colonel.
