Confederate States Army

< to February • March 1865

Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early

Wharton’s Division barely mustered 1,000 men. It was wiped out along with McNaughton’s and Nelson’s Artillery at the Battle of Waynesboro on March 2. Early narrowly escaped capture and made his way to Richmond. But Lee sent him home, then relieved him of his command, thanking him for his service.

Rosser’s Cavalry, which had disbanded for the winter, returned to the Richmond area along with McCausland’s Brigade, leaving Imboden’s and Jackson’s Brigades of Lomax’s cavalry the only remnants of the Army of the Valley. Lomax left the Valley after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox on April 9 and joined Johnston army in North Carolina. He surrendered at Greensboro.
