Commanded by Brigadier General George Sykes
After the original 2nd Division of the 5th corps was transferred to the Department of the Shenandoah, a new 2nd Division was recreated on May 18, 1862, based around nine regiments of United States Regulars that had operated as the army’s infantry Reserve. The division would become famous as “Sykes’ Regulars.”
