Commanded by Major General Benjamin Huger

On April 27 General Johnston ordered Huger to abandon the Norfolk area, salvaging what he could from the Gosport Navy Yard. Huger began evacuaing his troops to Petersburg on May 1, leading to the destruction of the C.S.S. Virginia and the Federal occupation of Norfolk for the rest of the war.
