Confederate States Army * Army of Northern Virginia
< to December • January 1865 • to February >
Major General Wade Hampton (to 1/19)
Due to the army’s supply problems during the winter it was decided to send Butler’s Division to North Carolina where there was plentiful fodder. It was intended to be a temporary solution, but the division never returned to Virginia. This left the Cavalry Corps with but one division, so Wade Hampton also left for the Carolinas to recruit. But he, also, never returned.
‘Rooney’ Lee was given responsibility for all the cavalry on the right wing of the army, reporting directly to Headquarters of the Army of Northern Virginia. Although intended to be temporary, this also would continue until the end of the war.
