The Cavalry Corps was created on September 9 from Stuart’s Cavalry Division, consisting of two divisions under Hampton and Fitz Lee. Hampton’s Division was temporarily under the direct command of General Stuart while Hampton recovered from his Gettysburg wounds.

Note: In Fitz Lee’s Division Lomax and Wickham were both promoted from colonel to brigadier general effective September 9. Colonel Chambliss was equally deserving of promotion but could not be, as W.H.F. Lee was still brigadier general of the brigade even though wounded and a Northern prisoner.
