On August 6. 1864 the FIrst and Third Cavalry Divisions of the Army of the Potomac were transferred to the Middle Military Division, Army of the Shenandoah.The Second Cavalry Division was transferred from the Army of West Virginia.  These three divisions became the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Shenandoah under the command of Brigadier General Alfred T. A. Torbert.
