The 1st Corps was discontinued and its units merged into the Fifth Army Corps on March 24, 1864. The 1st Division of the 1st Corps became the 4th Division of the 5th Corps. The men of the 1st Division were permitted to continue to use the red circle of their 1st Corps, 1st Division symbol.
