The Department of West Virginia was organized on June 28, 1863 from the Eighth Corps, Middle Department. It consisted of the new state of West Virginia and the state of Maryland west of the Alleghenies. Although the troops were transferred from the Eighth Corps the were no longer part of the the Corps, which remained in the Middle Department.
