Confederate States Army * Army of Northern Virginia

< to March • April 1865

Lieutenant General Richard Anderson (relieved April 8)

Two brigades of Johnson’s Division were detached to reinforce Pickett’s Division on the right flank and were mostly destroyed or captured at the Battle of Five Forks. Many of the survivors of the corps were captured or scattered at the Battle of Sayler’s Creek. So few remained as Lee’s army approached Appomattox Court House that Richard Anderson and Bushrod Johnson were relieved of their commands and the Fourth Corps was dissolved. The survivors under the command of Brigadier General William Wallace were merged with the Second Corps. They surrendered the next day at Appomattox Court House.
