Commanded by Major General George Crook

Troops from the Department of West Virginia operated as part of the Army of the Shenendoah (Middle Military Division, Department of the Shenandoah) under the overall command of Major General Philip H. Sheridan. They were often referred to as the “Army of West Virginia’ or “Eighth Corps,” even though they had been officially transferred to the Army of the Shenandoah.
