The 1st Corps was discontinued and its units merged into the Fifth Army Corps on March 24, 1864. Two brigades of the 1st Division and one of the 3rd Division of the 1st Corps became the 4th Division of the 5th Corps. The men of the 1st Division were permitted to continue to use their 1st Division symbols.
