After Early’s Confederate Army of the Valley was destroyed at Waynesboro on March 2 the Cavalry Corps left the Valley, raiding towards Charlottesville. It would rejoin the Army of the Potomac around Petersburg at the end of the month. A composite brigade of cavalry was left behind in the Shenandoah.
