Lieutenant General James Longstreet
On February 12 Major General Charles W. Field was assigned to Hood’s division and promoted to Major General, giving him command of the division. Field had been on convalescent leave since his wound at Second Manassas and had never served in the division. Longstreet tried to get him reassigned to command McLaws’ Division so he could give Micah Jenkins command of Hood’s Division, but the Confederate high command sternly rebuked Longstreet and insisted Field be left where he had been assigned.
