The First Corps suffered high casualties in the Battle of Gettysburg. Eight of the fourteen division and brigade commanders became casualties, with four brigade commanders killed or mortally wounded. Pickett’s Division was the hardest hit, with sixteen of its seventeen brigade and regimental commanders killed or wounded.

Hood’s Division suffered heavily during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg in its attack on the Union flank and its unsuccessful assault on Little Round Top. Hood himself was badly wounded by an artillery shell at the beginning of the attack.

Pickett’s Division – Major General George E. Pickett

With two of its five brigade detached back near Richmond, Pickett’s was the smallest Confederate Division at Gettysburg. The division was annihilated on July 3 in Pickett’s Charge, suffering well over 50% casualties. The losses among the enlisted men were matched by the devastation of the division’s officer corps.
