Confederate States Army

August 1862 • to September >

Major General Gustavus Smith

General Smith was the ranking major general of the Army of Northern Virginia and had briefly taken command of the Army when General Johnston was wounded on June 30. But he broke down under the strain and President Davis gave Robert E. Lee the command of the army.  By early August Smith had recovered from his breakdown. On August 10 he was given command of the three divisions that Lee was leaving behind to cover Richmond while the rest of the army marched north to deal with Pope.
