Confederate States Army * Army of Northern Virginia

< to April •  May 1864to June >

Lieutenant General James Longstreet (wounded May 6)
Major General Richard Anderson

Longstreet had barely rejoined the Army of Northern Virginia from Tennessee when he was taken out of action by friendly fire at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5-6) in circumstances eerily similar to the loss of Jackson a year earlier. There was additional hard fighting at Spotsylvania Court House (May 8-21). At the end of the month Pickett’s Division rejoined the corps from the Richmond defences, where it had been rebuilding its strength after Gettysburg.
