Lieutenant General James Longstreet
The Confederate defenses around Petersburg collapsed after the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, where Pickett’s Division was overrun. In the retreat to the west a large portion of Kershaw’s and the survivors of Pickett’s Divisions were captured at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek on April 6. The remainder of the First Corps surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
