Confederate States Army * Army of Northern Virginia
< to August • September 1863 • October >
Lieutenant General James Longstreet
Major General John B. Hood (w 9/20)
Most of Hood’s and McLaws’ divisions were transferred to Georgia under the command of Longstreet. One brigade of Georgians from each division was sent to Charleston, South Carolina. Pickett’s badly depleted division was sent to the Richmond defenses where it was hoped it could recruit and rebuild. The artillery battalions of each division could not be transported to Geirgia and was transferred to other units.
Hood, still recovering from his Gettysburg wound, rejoined his division on its 800 mile trip west. He reached the Chickamauga battlefield with one brigade on September 18. On the September 20 two more brigades of his division arrived, and Hood was given command of a corps consisting of his own division under Brigadier General Evander Law, two brigades of McLaws’ Division under Brigadier General Joseph Keshaw, and a provisional division from the Army of Tennessee under Bushrod Johnson. Hood was badly wounded on the 20th, losing his right leg. He survived but never returned to his division, transferring to the Western Theater after his partial recovery.
