Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early

On June 13 the the Army of Northern Virginia’s Second Corps moved to the Shenandoah Valley, becoming the nucleus of the Army of the Valley. On June 18 Arnold Elzey and Robert Ransom arrived from Richmond. Elzey took over Breckenridge’s Infantry Division and Ransom the cavalry.

John Breckinridge was made commander of an unofficial corps consisting of his and Gordon’s Divisions, while Early retained direct command of the rest of the army.

Breckinridge continued in command but was unable to ride for several days.

Breckinridge’s Division had temporarily transferred to Lee’s army at Richmond from the Shenandoah Valley after the Battle of New Market on May 15. After the Battle of Cold Harbor, Breckinridge’s Division was sent back to the Shenandoah Valley on June 7 attached to Early’s Army of the Valley

Ramseur’s Division – Major General Stephen Dodson Ramseur

Early’s Division had been badly damaged by the heavy fighting in June, losing two brigades, gaining two others, and receiving newly promoted brigadier generals for all three brigades that remained. Brigadier General Stephen Dodson Ramseur transferred from Rodes’ Division and was promoted to major general to command the division.
