Major General John B. Gordon

 

The Second Corps returned from the Army of the Valley in late December of 1864. Lieutenant General Jubal Early remained in command of Confederate forces in the Valley and Major General John B. Gordon took temporary command of the corps. This eventually became permanent when it became clear that Early would be remaining in the Shenandoah. Hardaway’s artillery battalion rejoined from its temporary stay with the First Corps.

Gordon’s Division left the Army of the Valley on December 9th and returned to the Army of Northern Virginia. Jubal Early stayed on in command of the Valley and John Gordon took over command of the Second Corps. Clement Evans took over command of the division.

Rodes’ Division – Brigadier General Bryan Grimes

Rodes’ Division returned to the Army of Northern Virginia from the Shenandoah Valley in late December. Major General Robert Rodes had been mortally wounded at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864. Major General Stephen D. Ramseur had commanded it for a month until he was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek, but no permanent commander had yet been named for the division. The senior brigadier, Bryan Grimes, was in command and would eventually be promoted to major general and formally given command of the division.
