Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early
After the defeat at Cedar Creek and the burning of the Valley it was evident that Early’s army was at the end of its effectiveness. Kershaw’s Division, which had been on loan from the First Corps since August, was ordered to return to the Richmond area.
