Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early
On August 7 Lee sent Kershaw’s Division of the First Corps to join the Army of the Valley. In mid-August he sent Fitzhugh Lee’s Cavalry Division.

Thomas F. Toon had been commanding his brigade as temporary brigadier general since Robert D. Johnston was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House in May. Johnston returned to resume command in August and Toon reverted to his rank of colonel comanding the 20th North Carolina Regiment.
