Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early
Sheridan seemed to be yet another timid Union commander and the Shenandoah Valley was relatively quiet, so on September 14 Kershaw’s Division was ordered to return to the Army of Northern Virginia. Five days later on Setember 19, Sheridan’s surprise assault and the resulting Third Battle of Winchester and subsequent Battle of Fisher’s Hill on Setember 22 caused heavy casualties to Early’s army.
On Sepember 21 John Breckinridge was ordered to leave the army to resume his command of the Department of Western Tennessee and West Virginia. The informal corps structure was abandoned and all divisions reprorted directly to Early. On September 26 Kershaw’s Division returned to the Valley following the Confederate defeat at Third Winchester. After Robert Rodes was killed at Third Winchester, Stephen Dodson Ramseur was transferred to command of Rodes’ Division and his place was taken by John Pegram.
