Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early

The Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19 began as a Confederate victory but by the end of the day’s fighting turned into a decisive defeat. Stephen D. Ramseur was killed, leaving Bryan Grimes in charge of his (formerly Rodes’) division. The Army of the Shenandoah retreated again to the upper Valley.

Kershaw’s Division – Major General Joseph B. Kershaw

In late August Kershaw’s Division had been temporarily transferred to Jubal Early’s Army of the Valley in the Shenandoah Valley. On September 14 it had left to return to Lee’s main army when Sheridan looked like he was not a threat, but it had turned around after the disaster at Third Winchester and rejoined Early on September 26.
