Major General Daniel Harvey Hill (to 1/14)
Brigadier General Robert Rodes
On January 14 Hill was transfered to take command of troops in his native North Carolina, which was threatened by a Northern offensive. Robert Rodes took command of the division as senior brigadier. It was thought to be a temporary transfer, but it became a permanent move.
Doles’ Brigade swapped two North Carolina regiments for two Georgia regiment from Talliaferro’s Brigade of Jackson’s Division, creating an all-Georgia brigade for Doles.

Jackson’s Division – Brigadier General William B. Taliaferro
In January of 1863 a number of regiments were tansferred between brigades in the army to complete President Davis’ plan of having all the regiments in a brigade from the same state. Talliferro’s Brigade sent two Alabama regiments to Hood’s Division and received two North Carolina regiments from D.H. Hill’s Division.
